Five Fantastic Books I’m Reading This Month

Sharing is caring!

I’m starting a new series, yo! Five Books I’m Reading This Month; also to include books I want to read this month. It’s complicated.

In an earlier version of my life, I read scores of books every year. This was back during the pre-digital age, when I had an hour-long subway commute every day, each way, and 300 fewer channels to watch. Now that my work is mostly location-independent, I don’t spend much time on the subway and I’m working all the time from my computer at home with Bravo playing in the background. Ugh! I feel myself getting dumber by the day.

However, earlier this year, I took a mental-health break from working (and life) and read close to 30 books in 6 weeks. I’m obsessive. It was great! Now, I’m wanting to take a more moderate approach to my love of reading and I wanted to share the books on my nightstand and a few from my wish list. Read on!

Books I’m Reading This Month

First on my list is one I don’t yet own, but is at the tippy top of my Christmas Wish List:

Obama, An Intimate Portrait by Pete Souza and Barack Obama

If you’re not following Pete Souza on Instagram, you are missing. out. on. LIFE! His archives are insane and he is trolling the hell out of 45’s administration with glorious and gloriously funny counterpoints from the Obama White House. He is genius and I’m dying to get my hands on this coffee table favorite.

Next up is:

A New Model: What Confidence, Beauty and Power Really Look Like by Ashley Graham

Thick thighs and high cheekbones and I’m here for it all, honey! At the forefront of the body positivity movement, Ashley Graham is helping bring back voluptuousness, in all its glory, while talking about confidence and striving for the life you really want.

Which brings me to this lovely breath of fresh air:

The Last Black Unicorn by Tiffany Haddish

Haven’t read it yet but I can’t imagine that it isn’t laugh-out-loud hilarious. I need some hilarity in my life at the moment.

I could also use some inner soul searching and that’s where this gem comes in.

The Untethered Soul by Michael A. Singer

I received this book as gift a couple of Christmases ago and started reading it immediately. Then, I promptly put it down because I wasn’t in the spiritual head space to take it on. I picked it up again a couple of weeks ago and the timing couldn’t be more perfect. In the spiritual tradition of Deepak Chopra and Wayne Dyer, Michael Singer has written an easily digestible and completely life transforming book. Get it now!

Last on my list is a perennial favorite of mine.

Creating a Charmed Life by Victoria Moran

I was introduced to this book a little over a decade ago. My pages are yellowed and frayed but I still reference it when I’m looking for practical ways to up-level my life in small and not-so-small ways. It’s a real treasure.

Honorable Mention

Just Breathe by Radhika Vachani

Combining the spiritual with the physical through the practice of yoga and awareness of the breath, Just Breathe is a collection of insights that promote mental, emotional and physical wellness. I like it because it’s not just theory as it combines physical practices (yoga and yogic principles) with the more esoteric ideas on transformation.

What Are You Reading Right Now?

Are you a voracious reader or a dabbler? Do you prefer actual books or are you a Kindle lover? What titles are on your nightstand? On your wish list? I’m dying to know. Tell me!

  1. Tiffany Haddish’s book is on my list of books to read too! I can’t wait to dive into it. She’s my best friend in my head. LOL!

  2. That tiff haddish book and the untethered soul. Those 2 are on my list. I do a 52 book challenge each year so I will be sure to devour these two!

  3. Oooh! These are some great picks that I definitely need to check out. I definitely want to read Tiffany’s book and the Obama book. I heard Tiffany’s book was ooutstanding as an audiobook because she reads it. The same for Jennifer Lewis’ new book. I heard a snippet and was already screaming. I just signed up for Kindle Unlimited so I’m going to see what I can find there. Girl, I don’t read near as much as I used to. I gotta correct that! LOL

  4. Great suggestions. Tiffany Haddish is my spirit animal. I definitely need to get her book. She’s hilarious!

    1. Patranila says:

I can’t wait to see more from her!

  5. HA! I feel you on Bravo. I feel like I always need to cleanse my brain with a documentary after catching up on the Housewives.

I love this list. I’m currently (TRYING to finish) You are a Badass at Making Money, by Jen Sincero. It’s not bad. I just can’t seem to get into it, even thought I loved the original. I’m giving myself this week to read a good chunk of it. If not, I’m putting it up and grabbing something else. Ashley Graham’s book on your list sounds good!

    1. Patranila says:

YES! I have to change the channel to PBS or listen to some NPR to balance my equilibrium! I’ve heard about that Badass book. I bought Worth on Kindle but wasn’t able to get into that at my first sitting. Maybe later.
