Low-Acid Coffee Saved My Coffee-Loving Life

If you know me at all, you know I’m a coffee lover from way back. When I was a little girl, my mom would let me have half a cup of decaf and I felt so grown up. Of course, it took me all day to drink that half a cup and now I know why!

The acid that naturally occurs in coffee does not agree with me at all. Raise your hand if you suffer from acid reflux. That would be me. Severe suffering, let me tell you, and I didn’t discover my condition until I was actually a grownup. SMH.

Fast forward to my heart sinking as my doctor tells me that I should stop drinking coffee all together. Say what now?

Coffee wasn’t the only thing I was to give up but it is the only thing I didn’t give up. I did make a modification though. Low-acid coffee!

What is low-acid coffee?

When we talk about acid levels, we use the pH scale. You remember those little strips of paper from school, the litmus tests, where you’d see which liquids changed the color of the paper? Yeah, that.

Pure water is neutral with a pH of 7.0. Coffee is acidic with a pH between 4.85 and 5.13. While there’s not a great difference in the pH range of regular coffee and the low-acid kind, every little bit helps. Especially if you have a sensitive stomach and/or drink a ton of coffee. *Raises hand.

French press for me thanks!

Should I try a coffee with low acidity?

Well, it couldn’t hurt! If you find that your morning cup of joe makes your tummy feel a little funny but you power through because you love it, I’d say give the lower acidity brands a try.

People who suffer from GERD, IBS, ulcers, or other tummy troubles may benefit from low acidity coffee as well.

I found several low-acid coffee brands and tried a few before I settled on Subtle Earth Organic Coffee. I love the medium-dark roast and have the whole bean delivered from Amazon every few weeks. This blend is smooth and once I pair it with some oat milk and Sugar in the Raw, I’m in coffee lover heaven. My tummy is much happier too!

Here are a few of the low acidity coffee options that are available on Amazon. Sign up for auto delivery and you’ll be all set. Tap the images below to shop.
