The Purpose of Pain
Every couple of years a story makes the rounds about the fashionistas among us and the growing trend of foot surgery for the sake of stilettos. And each time this happens, doctors go on record telling us that this is a bad idea. According to the Daily Mail, the number of procedures has doubled this year and range from the mild, collagen injections, to the extremes of toe shortening and narrowing of the foot. Surgery. For shoes. Shoes.
Now don’t get me wrong, I love a fly shoe as much as the next girl but I think we’re going too far with this.
The Purpose of Pain
Getting on my high horse now. There’s a reason 5-, 6- and 7-inch heels are painful. Do we really need to spell it out? Pain is present in the body to tell you when to knock it off. You don’t win any points for powering through. None. ‘No pain, no gain’ is a crock.

Getting off my high horse. It recently occurred to me that I’ve been powering through in many areas of my life to the absolute detriment of my well-being. Physical, mental and emotional. Case in point. The other day, I had been sitting and working for a long while and, upon standing, I felt more than a little dizzy. Instead of paying attention and responding to what was happening, that the room actually appeared to be spinning, I kept walking to the kitchen where the snacks were. Steadying myself with the help of the walls. Powering through.
It wasn’t until I had reached for the cabinet knob and missed it (because I was seeing three of them where there was only one) that it dawned on me that, perhaps, I should sit down. That maybe achieving my goal and attaining the snack was indeed important, but maybe there was something more important for me to do in that moment. Listen to what my body was saying and respond accordingly.
So it goes with working yourself to the point of exhaustion, staying in a relationship that isn’t working and stuffing yourself into things that oftentimes resemble medieval torture devices. The purpose of pain is to get you off the track that’s causing problems for your health and well-being and to get you on the path that leads to your best self.
Get it done but don’t kill your self in the process.
